The Department of Sociology invites qualified undergraduates majoring in Sociology to apply for admission to the Honors Program in Sociology. We are seeking outstanding applicants who are juniors and seniors. The Honors Program in Sociology is both exciting and demanding. If your interests in and commitment to Sociology are high, and you satisfy the prerequisites, please consider applying for the Honors Program in Sociology. Students accepted must enroll in: H188A in the Fall and H188B in the Spring.
NOTE: If you are accepted into the honors program, you do not need to take Sociology 180A, "Sociology Majors Seminar."
The Honors Program is open to outstanding Sociology majors during their Junior and Senior year. To gain admission to the program, potential Honor students normally take Sociology courses in Sociol 120, Sociological Theory, Sociol 110, Research Methods, Sociol 10A, B, & C, Probability and Statistics, and at least two Sociology upper division courses. Students who receive an average grade of 3.5 or better in these five courses (including on of the three 10 A, B or C statistics courses) will be eligible for the honors program. In addition, Honors students should have an average of 3.2 or better in all courses taken at UC Irvine. Majors who are transfer students may petition for entry into the program based on their grades from their former schools.
During their junior/senior year, Honors students will write a thesis, designed and carried out under faculty supervision. Projects will normally entail some empirical analysis of sociological data. Students will meet regularly in a two-quarter Honors Seminar (Sociology H188A and H188BW) to design and carry out these projects, to exchange ideas, and to help analyze each other's work. In addition, Honors students will be required to attend at least two research talks or colloquia. Students are encouraged to attend talks related to their Honors thesis and hosted by the UCI Sociology department, although talks about research on any social issue may count toward this requirement. Students can consult the Honors Program Director if they are unsure about a talk's eligibility. Following their attendance at a research talk, students complete and submit a short form in which they briefly summarize the talk and its data and methods and identify one lesson learned that might inform or improve their Honors thesis project. The form should be submitted to the Honors Program Director within seven days of attending the talk. Although attendance at only two talks is required, students are encouraged to attend more than two research talks.
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 1ST. IF DEADLINE FALLS ON A HOLIDAY OR WEEKEND, THE DUE DATE WILL BE THE FOLLOWING WORKING DAY. NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE WILL OCCUR SHORTLY AFTER AUGUST 1ST. FOR THOSE WHO APPLY LATE, ACCEPTANCE WILL BE LIMITED AS SEATS ARE LIMITED.
